Geography
Curriculum Intent
The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It's about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it's about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together. - Barak Obama.
At Wixams Academy, we believe in ensuring that our students become global citizens, aware of their location and how their interactions shape their world and the world of others. Our Key Stage Three curriculum equips students with the skills to explore the physical, human and environmental aspects of the world that they are a part of. Linking these issues together, seeing how they interact allows the students to gain perspective on the issues facing the world, equipping them with the breadth of knowledge about the world they will be entering.
During their studies at GCSE, students delve deeper into these aspects and begin to assess their complexity and interdependency. This develops their skills and competency at understanding global issues. This allows them to become truly global citizens. In order to do so, they develop their geographical skills, questioning who, what, why, when and how. They use both collect and analyse their own data, using a variety of methods including GIS. As they progress, they become prepared to take their place in the world, whether that is via higher education or employment, they leave aware of the complexities of the world they are taking their place in.
